Fans in the Fight Against Childhood Cancer
What started out as a parody account has turned into something infinitely cooler, and exponentially more important than a place for laughs (although we still do that, a lot actually, primarily at the Vikings' expense) : A community of football-loving fans on a mission to put an end to childhood cancer.
"WHAT DO YOU MEAN" YOU ASK?
If you're a new follower, or you're a veteran follower who somehow missed all 100 billion of my tweets throughout the 2013 season asking you to support the MACC FUND, then let me fill you in:
Last season, Packers fans (and fans of other teams) from all across the world came together to do something incredible. Collectively, we raised over $16 thousand dollars to help MACC FUND in the fight against childhood cancer.
"WHAT IS CHILDHOOD CANCER? ISN'T THAT TERM A LITTLE BROAD?"
Childhood cancer is a cluster of ruthless diseases that leaves thousands of children (and their families) in its devastating wake each year. Despite childhood cancer being the leading cause of death by disease in children, research to cure these life threatening illnesses remains vastly and continuously underfunded (To be frank, less than 5% of the government's total funding for cancer research is dedicated to childhood cancer every year. Many research projects require other types of funding in order to find new treatments and possible cures for children battling cancer, which is why your donations to the MACC FUND are so vital)
"WHAT IS THIS MACC FUND YOU SPEAK OF?"
The Midwest Athletes Against Childhood Cancer Fund (MACC Fund) was set up in 1976 and has contributed $45 million dollars to childhood cancer and related blood disorder research. The MACC Fund supports the Medical College of Wisconsin, Children's Hospital of Wisconsin, The University of Wisconsin Carbone Center, and the MACC Fund Pediatric Cancer Research Wing at the Wisconsin Institute of Medical Research on the UW- Madison campus.
BUT YOU'RE A PARODY ACCOUNT... HOW DO WE KNOW THIS IS REAL?
You are very right. I am in no way Aaron Rodgers. I've never met him, nor do I do anything else involving him besides exploit his good name for an outstanding cause... With his blessing by the way (thanks for that QB1) I run a parody account... A silly little Twitter handle that doesn't require any actual physical skill to play football... But I am a real person with real thoughts and experiences. One of those experiences came in October 2006 when my sister (who was 17 at the time) was diagnosed with Ewing's Sarcoma. Like many other types of Childhood Cancer, Ewing's Sarcoma is a rare and deadly cancer that primarily affects teenagers and young adults. After countless doctors appointments and meetings with pediatric oncologists, my sister was about to begin chemotherapy, when one of the specialists on her case decided to do a biopsy of the tumor growing on her femur. After a grueling 2 hour wait, the doctor emerged from the operating room and told us the greatest news I have ever heard: My sister didn't have cancer. "WAIT...WHAT?" My sister had a massive infection called "Cat Scratch Fever" (Yes, like the song) that mimicked the cancer in blood tests, MRIs and X-rays. To say we were relieved is an understatement. I will never forget that day because of the relief we felt, but I will also never forget it because as I looked around the waiting room I saw so many families who wouldn't ever get to feel that same relief. My family got incredibly lucky, and ever since that day I have made it my goal to dedicate my professional, and a lot of my personal life to help children fighting these cancers so that they may live the lives they deserve to live, cancer free.
So, "is this real" you ask? ANSWER: Yes. It is 100% real. The link I have provided for donations takes you directly to the MACC FUND site where 100% of your donation is given directly to the charity. I make no money off of this, and I remain completely anonymous. The only people benefiting from this are the kids fighting cancer, which rules... So please donate here:
